Regular Exercise Is a Great Weapon in the Fight Against Illness
We have spent an awful lot of time talking about COVID-19. Indeed, the conversation has been ongoing for the better part of the last year-and-a-half. The big COVID discussions right now are all about face coverings and vaccines. Unfortunately, not everyone has always agreed on such things. Perhaps there is one thing we can all agree on in the long run: regular exercise is a great weapon in the fight against illness.
Though science hasn't proven exactly why regular exercise helps fight against sickness and disease, the fact that it does is generally accepted medical knowledge. There are a number of prevailing theories:
Exercise may help purge the lungs of viruses, bacteria, etc.
Regular exercise can boost white blood cell counts
Increased body temperature during exercise might help the body fight infection better
Exercise helps the body control stress hormones, thereby increasing immune performance.
In terms of studies, there are plenty to choose from. One particular study looking at more than a thousand adults showed that increasing regular exercise can improve the body's ability to fight off infection. The subjects were followed for 12 weeks and split into groups based on exercise. Those who exercised five times per week or more showed a decrease in respiratory tract infections of 40%.
Indoor Cycling Is Great Exercise
The key to that study is that the healthier subjects engaged in aerobic exercise. This is exercise that focuses on getting the heart moving rather than building muscle mass. Indoor cycling is a form of aerobic exercise. Not only that, but we also believe it is one of the best forms because of its high energy, low impact nature.
Indoor cycling definitely gets the heart pumping. When it's taught by an experienced instructor in a studio like ours, cycling is combined with appropriate music that leads riders through a planned routine. Music is also a way to motivate cyclists during their rides. The result is a fantastic workout without a huge time commitment.
